Hammer to Aunta-Gun-Ish's House

Day 52, Pictou - Antigonish Nova Scotia
Dist, 81km,  22.9 km/hr, Saddle Time 3:30
July 8 2011
A very short, fun, hot  day.
After leaving the exceptionally stuffy Braeside Inn, I decided to log some much overdue tourist time. I soaked up the "HECTOR HERITAGE QUAY" in  "Downtown Pictou". This wonderful heritage site offers a Museum, a replica Sailing ship, a Blacksmith shop, and a Carpentry/Carving  workshop. The focus was on the "Hector" Scot's ship and the immigrants who came to Pictou in the 1700's. I loved this visit, and was happy to invest my time here. I met the artisan who perfected the wooden carvings that laden the inside and outside of the ship as well as other fine details. His craft was performed using authentic tools of the trade for that era.The Mighty Hector
I spent around 3 hours in Pictou, before heading to Antigonish. It was a worthy trade:
(60-75km riding distance for 3 hours Tourist Time). It justifies blowing through PEI.  Pictou was nice. A small old town with tons of character and heritage without the commercial cost. I noticed lots of people walking around holding "Tim Hortons" coffee cups and I thought that it would be great to have some Joe and a sandwich before heading out. I asked where it was and rode around the town several times without any luck. I asked a few more times and still no luck. God, I was getting pissed, but more determined than ever to find this hidden town secret. Well, turns out that it was near where I started and rode past it many times. I understand the reason for maintaining the town's aesthetics throughout all buildings, but there's also something to be said for familiarity. "D'oh !"
The highway to Antigonish reminded me of BC. a bit. Long large hills. Lots of traffic seeing as it is Friday, and there is tons of festivities going on all around the region. I noticed another bike tourist entering the hwy behind me. I left them in the dust. I knew that my trip was short, so I Hammered the hills and exausted many calories. It was fun!  Also, I was worried about accommodation availability. Turns out the only thing available in Antigonish was a room at the Claymore Inn which was perfect. Close to the highway, all amenities within a 250 metre radius and walking distance to downtown including the "Highland Games".

Murray the master carver (I forgot his true name) Awesome artwork, cool tools. He's doing his Carol Burnett imitation.

I think these will go on the outside of the ship

Just like grade 8 woodworking class...Or any typical camping scenerio.

One of the fine women of the voyage. No I Pad's to pass the time here.

Living scenerio aboard Hector. Privacy was not available.

The captain locked in deep thought. Or High.
Had the ship to myself. Cool. HWC was guarding Shirley.

Douglas Fir from BC. This mast is replacing the one that was destroyed by lightning. A difficult task when funds are from donations.

A fine mechanical advantage.
